The
practice of auto
donations involves donating no-longer-wanted cars, trucks, vans & RV’s to
charity organizations. In the United States, these charitable donations
provide a tax benefit to the donor; as such, this type of giving has
become very popular. Non-profit
organizations in the US have come to rely increasingly upon the revenue
from car donations. This type of donation has become increasingly
widespread in the U.S.; in 2000, 733,000 taxpayers reduced their taxes by
$654 million. |

Many
charities run programs auto donations. Some have their own car lots which sell
the donated cars but many have their auto donations processed through auto
auction companies. At least one charity exists (Charity Motors, based in
Detroit with locations in Atlanta and Dallas) which collects and sells
donated cars and distributes the money to whichever charity the donor
indicates. This allows income from auto donations to flow to charities which do
not run their own programs. Auto donations can be a way to relieve yourself of problems and also benefit your favorite charity in need. Additionally, making auto donations to charity is a simple and effective way to get a tax deduction. Since January 2005, the IRS has taken over the job of determining the value of your car donation.
